In a time of recession, when jobs are scarce, the UA lent a hand to students
by presenting a career fair to help them make contact with potential employers.
Organized by the Career Development Center, the Nola Hold Royster/Jennifer Hopkins Career
Fair was sponsored by the CDC, the Black Alumni Society and the Lemke Department of Journalism.
"In this economy, students need to take every opportunity to present themselves," said
Barbara Batson, CDC director.
Nearly 200 students attended the fair, which had 39 companies present, including Arvest Bank, KNWA-TV, State Farm Insurance and The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, which offered sales jobs to students.
According to the paper's representative, sales manager Brad Boreing, sales is a way to get started in the business and offers a reasonable salary.
Senior Jessica Powviriya, a journalism major with emphasis in AD/PR, talked to the paper at the fair but didn't find what she was looking for..
"I'm a little disappointed. I was looking for a summer internship more so than a full-time job," said Powviriya, who has been accepted into the journalism grad program this fall.
Erica Ester-Beard, a career counselor, who registered students as they arrived, said,"It has been a great turnout, and students seem to be in a positive mood when leaving."
Senior Chaney Prock, majoring in kinesiology, has attended the last two fairs. ?
"It?s just fun to see what jobs are out there," she said, "even if it's not in one's own field of study."
Junior Stacey Trucks, an interior design major, said she benefits from such an event.
"I feel it's never too early to make contacts," she said. "I find it helps knowing what types of jobs are out when it comes to choosing classes."
